Limerence adalah keadaan mental ketika seseorang jatuh cinta secara membabi buta[1][2] atau mengalami ketertarikan yang sangat kuat[3][4] ketika balasan atas perasaan tersebut tidak pasti. Keadaan ini ditandai dengan pikiran-pikiran intrusif dan idealisasi terhadap orang yang dicintai (disebut juga "kristalisasi"), yang biasanya disertai dengan keinginan kuat akan adanya balasan untuk membentuk suatu hubungan intim. Hal ini juga dibersamai oleh perasaan ekstase atau keputusasaan, bergantung pada apakah perasaan seseorang tampaknya dibalas atau tidak.[5] Penelitian mengenai biologi cinta romantis menunjukkan bahwa tahap awal dari cinta romantis yang intens (disebut juga cinta bergairah) menyerupai adiksi, tetapi para akademisi saat ini belum menyepakati bagaimana adiksi cinta didefinisikan.[6][7][8]

Psikolog Dorothy Tennov mencetuskan istilah "limerence" sebagai perubahan dari kata "amorance" tanpa adanya etimologi lain.[9][10][11] Konsep ini berkembang dari penelitiannya pada dekade 1960-an ketika ia mewawancarai lebih dari 500 orang mengenai topik cinta, yang awalnya diterbitkan dalam bukunya, Love and Limerence.[12][13][14][15] Menurut Tennov, "berada dalam keadaan limerence berarti merasakan apa yang biasanya disebut 'jatuh cinta'."[16] Ia mencetuskan istilah tersebut untuk membedakan keadaan ini dari emosi lain yang tidak terlalu menggebu-gebu, serta untuk menghindari anggapan bahwa orang yang tidak mengalaminya tidak mampu mencintai.[17][18] Tennov terinspirasi untuk mempelajari cinta romantis setelah bertemu dengan orang-orang dalam tugasnya sebagai profesor yang mengalami patah hati parah dan situasi pelik dalam kehidupan pribadi.[19][12] Penelitian Tennov menunjukkan kepadanya bahwa limerence adalah hal yang normal (meskipun tidak logis), dan sebuah survei pada tahun 2025 menunjukkan bahwa sebanyak 50–60% populasi pernah mengalaminya.[20][21][22]

Limerence merupakan sebuah konsep deskriptif, alih-alih sebuah diagnosis atau gangguan mental; kondisi ini tidak tercantum dalam Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM).[23] Sifat polisemi dari kata-kata cinta telah menyebabkan kebingungan semantik yang ingin diperjelas oleh Tennov, meskipun hingga saat ini masih terdapat perbedaan pendapat mengenai bagaimana limerence didefinisikan.[24][18][25] Penelitian tentang cinta tidak pernah mengadopsi terminologi atau definisi yang seragam.[6][24] Menurut Tennov dan peneliti lainnya, limerence dapat dianggap sebagai cinta romantis yang intens,[26][9][27] jatuh cinta,[28][29][30] kegilaan cinta,[1][31][2] infatuasi yang mendalam,[4][32][30] cinta bergairah dengan elemen obsesif,[15][6][33] atau sakit cinta.[13][34][35] Limerence dan cinta obsesif memiliki kemiripan, tetapi cinta obsesif membawa konotasi perilaku posesif dan merugikan diri sendiri.[36][25][37] Limerence juga terkadang dibandingkan dan dikontraskan dengan cinta monyet, dengan limerence yang jauh lebih intens dan lebih memengaruhi fungsi kehidupan sehari-hari; digambarkan sebagai kondisi ketika cinta ini telah mengambil alih hidup seseorang.[38][39][40]

Love and Limerence telah disebut sebagai karya penting dalam penelitian cinta romantis, dengan hasil survei Tennov dan berbagai kisah pribadi yang diceritakan dalam buku tersebut menjadi awal mula pengumpulan data mengenai fenomena ini.[6][41]
