Formicinae adalah sebuah subfamili dalam famili Formicidae yang mencakup semut dengan perkembangan evolusioner menengah.
Anggota kelompok ini mempertahankan beberapa ciri primitif, seperti hadirnya kepompong di sekitar pupa, hadirnya oselus pada semut pekerja, dan kecederungan kepada penyusutan palp atau segmentasi antena pada sebagian besar spesies, kecuali kelompok yang hidup di bawah tanah. Modifikasi ekstrem mandibula jarang ditemukan, kecuali pada genera Myrmoteras dan Polyergus. Namun, beberapa anggota menunjukkan sifat evolusioner turunan yang mencolok pada sifatnya seperti perilaku penjajahan dan simbiosis dengan hemiptera pemakan-akar. Selain itu, semua anggota Formicinae memiliki sengat yang sangat menyusut dan cadangan bisa yang besar, dengan kelenjar bisa yang terspesialisasi untuk produksi asam format.[butuh rujukan]
