Bagian-bagian, awalnya kecil, dalam film-film besar diikuti, termasuk Dodsworth (1936), The Charge of the Light Brigade (1936), dan The Prisoner of Zenda (1937). Pada tahun 1942, ia ikut membintangi film pembangunan moral tentang pengembangan pesawat tempur Supermarine Spitfire yang terkenal, The First of the Few (1942).
Film-film terkenal lainnya selama periode waktu ini termasuk A Matter of Life and Death (1946), The Bishop's Wife (1947), Enchantment (1948), The Elusive Pimpernel (1950), The Moon Is Blue (1953), Around the World in 80 Days (1956), My Man Godfrey (1957), The Guns of Navarone (1961), Murder by Death (1976), dan Death on the Nile (1978).
