Macy Gray (lahir Natalie Renée McIntyre pada 6 September 1967[1]) adalah penyanyi-penulis lagu, musisi, produser rekaman, dan aktris Amerika Serikat beraliran R&B dan soul. Dirinya dikenal dari suaranya yang serak dengan gaya bernyanyi yang banyak terinspirasi oleh Billie Holiday.
Gray telah merilis sepuluh album studio dan menerima lima nominasi dan memenangkan satu Grammy Award. Dia juga turut tampil dalam beberapa film seperti Training Day, Spider-Man, Scary Movie 3, Lackawanna Blues, Idlewild, For Colored Girls, dan The Paperboy. Kehidupan awal
Natalie McIntyre lahir di Canton, Ohio.[2] Orang tuanya, Laura McIntyre, seorang guru matematika,[3] dan Otis Jones yang pergi ketika ia masih bayi. Ayah tirinya seorang pekerja baja, dan ia memiliki seorang saudara perempuan yang akan menjadi seorang guru biologi. Dia memulai pelajaran piano pada usia tujuh tahun. Kecelakaan sepeda masa kanak-kanak mengakibatkan dia memperhatikan kotak surat seorang pria bernama Macy Gray;[4] dia menggunakan nama itu dalam cerita yang dia tulis dan kemudian memutuskan untuk menggunakannya sebagai nama panggungnya.
Gray bersekolah dengan Brian Warner (kemudian dikenal sebagai musisi Marilyn Manson) meskipun mereka tidak saling kenal. Dia bersekolah di lebih dari satu sekolah menengah, termasuk sekolah asrama yang memintanya pergi karena perilakunya. Karier
Saat kuliah di University of Southern California, dia setuju untuk menulis lagu untuk seorang teman. Sesi demo dijadwalkan untuk lagu-lagu yang akan direkam oleh penyanyi lain, tetapi vokalis gagal muncul, sehingga Gray merekamnya sendiri.
Dia kemudian bertemu penulis-produser Joe Solo saat bekerja sebagai kasir di Beverly Hills. Bersama-sama, mereka menulis koleksi lagu dan merekamnya di studio milik Solo. Rekaman demo memberi Gray kesempatan untuk bernyanyi di kafe-kafe jazz di Los Angeles. Meskipun Gray tidak menganggap suaranya yang tidak biasa enak untuk didengar, Atlantic Records menandatangani kontrak dengan Gray. Dia mulai merekam rekaman debutnya tetapi dikeluarkan dari label setelah kepergian Tom Carolan dari A&R, yang telah membawanya ke label.[6] Macy kembali ke Ohio tetapi pada 1997, Zomba Publishing, Senior VP A&R, Jeff Blue, meyakinkannya untuk kembali ke musik dan mengontraknya, merekam lagu-lagu baru berdasarkan pengalaman hidupnya. On How Life Is
Gray mengerjakan album debutnya pada 1999 dengan produser Darryl Swann. Dirilis pada musim panas 1999, On How Life Is menjadi sukses besar di seluruh dunia. Meskipun single pertamanya "Do Something" tidak terlalu sukses, rilis single keduanya "I Try" membuat album ini sukses. "I Try" (yang awalnya ditampilkan dalam Love Jones dan film oleh Jennifer Aniston berjudul Picture Perfect pada 1997) adalah salah satu singel terbesar tahun 1999, dan singel berikutnya "Still" dan "Why Did You Call Me" memastikan album menjadi triple platinum di AS dan quadruple platinum di Inggris.[8]
Kehidupan pribadi
Gray menikah dengan Tracy Hinds, seorang broker hipotek, selama sekitar empat tahun, tetapi mereka bercerai ketika kariernya menanjak. Mereka memiliki tiga anak, Aanisah, Mel, dan Happy. Dia membuka Akademi Musik Macy Gray pada 2005.[9]
