Dalam industri kimia, zat kimia antara (atau secara kolektif disebut "bahan kimia antara"[1]) adalah produk (yang stabil) dari suatu proses reaksi kimia, yang bernilai sebagai reagen untuk proses kimia industri tahap selanjutnya, berbeda halnya dengan produk yang bernilai bagi konsumen akhir.[2] Sebagai contoh, etanol dapat digunakan sebagai pelarut, bahan bakar, dan dalam likeur buatan; namun, ketika dijual untuk memproduksi ester etil, etanol tersebut berperan sebagai zat antara kimia.[3]
Beberapa bahan kimia memperoleh nilainya semata-mata dari peran mereka sebagai zat antara kimia. Kumena dibuat dari benzena dan propilena, lalu digunakan untuk memproduksi aseton dan fenol melalui proses kumena. Kumena itu sendiri memiliki nilai yang relatif rendah jika berdiri sendiri, dan biasanya hanya diperjualbelikan antarperusahaan kimia.[4] Demikian pula, Komisi Ekonomi PBB untuk Eropa mendefinisikan adiponitril sebagai "senyawa antara dalam pembuatan nilon".[5] Kloroform dan karbon tetraklorida secara historis masing-masing digunakan sebagai anestesi dan pelarut, namun kini keduanya terutama berfungsi sebagai zat antara kimia untuk produksi fluorokarbon.[6] Zat antara kimia murni mencakup sebagian besar jenis produk kimia; pada tahun 1936, Williams Haynes memperkirakan bahwa zat-zat ini mencakup 70% dari seluruh bahan kimia yang diproduksi di Amerika Serikat.[7]
